Hi Everyone:
This is my first post and I have been on a strict KETO diet for 3 weeks and just want to say hi. As a 50 year old guy who has been struggling with IBS for over 6 years (I have been a vegetarian for about 15 years) and I finally hit rock bottom after trying all kinds of diets. Many forums reported success with healing IBS with the Ketogenic diet so I decided to give it a try. It is easier than I thought with great side effects (vivid dreams, better skin and hair, mental clarity, feeling more alive, feeling more serenity, etc.).
As a biologist, I began reading my biochemistry book on ketone bodies, ATP, mitochondria, the Krebs Citric Acid cycle and so forth. Fascinating read and I wish doctors (and nurses) would be required to have more nutrition science classes in medical/nursing school. I have had human nutrition, animal nutrition and equine (horse) nutrition, so I can say I probably know as much or more than the average doctor on the subject, especially considering other forms of animals. Many horses actually develop colic after consuming large quantities of apples, grains or concentrated feeds. They can die from rolling from abdominal pain and create gastric twists and even develop laminitis (hoof separation) from eating grains, so diet is extremely important to horses as well. Some vets only recommend hay and no grains unless it is a lactating mare with a foal or a high-performance race horse in training.
We need more research with ketogenic diets, but to everyone, the biggest or hardest obstacle with this diet is explaining my actions to others who ask - it is simply too difficult to explain especially with the IBS component. I give up and just joke about it to everyone saying this diet gives me super powers and that usually ends the conversation and we move to another topic.
OK, I look forward to chatting with anyone especially about the biochemistry aspect, IBS, and general Keto stuff. Currently, I am in Colombia living in a small town where they eat rice, potatoes, with big bakeries on every corner. At least the coffee is to die for I am trying to make some keto-friendly chocolate.
Saludos
