I have also tried the ketogenic diet, for experimental purposes, and lost significant body fat, with an increase in performance. See my chronicles here (http://timsketogenicdiet.blogspot.com.es).
However, it seems that when athletes do these types of things, they tend to have more success, maybe not because of the diet, but because of their mentality. The "stick-to-it" attitude that we tend to have, means that we can continue difficult tasks to their completion. The fact that most people bail on a diet mentally, before it is finished, is more likely a reason that they are not successful with whatever diet, as opposed to the diet not being effective. Just my two cents.
Now, I have friends who are not athletes, asking me how to do a ketogenic diet, but one of them is a hypoglycemic and I'm not sure if they could proceed on this type of diet. My research shows that people do it successfully, but I am not a doctor and do not want to give out medical advice. But, I am curious if anyone out there is having success with the keto diet that is/was a hypoglycemic individual. Thanks in advance!
