I am doing the keto diet with my mother, who is epileptic, as it has been proven to help epilepsy in adults even.
I need help in putting together a grocery list, and some recipes that even a 7 yr old would eat and still maintain her nutritional balance that she needs. Any comments or suggestions are welcomed. Good or bad
Do you or your mother like the following: Avocado, coconuts, cheeses, cream, red meats and green leafy veggies? Most of this will end up being staple foods.
I'm sure you know about getting in mostly fat in your caloric intake, moderate protein and low carb, so eating lots of avocados, coconut oils and such will really help here. Coconut oil also is MCT medium chain triglycerides that break down in the body quickly and the liver produces ketones from it to help speed up and keep in ketosis.
Depending on what foods you guys personally like your grocery list might look something like this
Things to buy
Avocadoes
Coconut oil
Olive oil
Heavy cream
Salted or unsalted butter (You need salt on this diet, but if a recipe calls for very little salt+butter, skip the added salt if you buy salted butter)
Green leafy veggies (Spinach, Kale, Romaine lettuce, anything dark green)
Meat, red or white. Nothing is off limits here, just sure to not get breaded or anything that's already seasoned, as it sadly has sugar usually. Best to just get a whole chicken or just some breasts and season it yourself.
Fish and shellfish are perfectly fine and encouraged
If you want anything sweet, get stevia either liquid form or crystals. Check though to make sure the carbs aren't high, I think it's the baking blend that is part sugar and part stevia, but I'm not sure. I believe you can also get xylitol too if you prefer it.
Any kind of cheese you want, just check carb content
Things to NOT buy
Legumes (though peanuts and peanut butter are ok with no added sugar - Try to find the lowest carb brand)
High/medium carb fruits (No apples, bananas, mangos etc. Mostly berries except blue on occasion)
Bread, pasta, rice or really anything with starches
No peas, beans, or any starchy veggie including of course potatoes and lesser known carrots.
And of course nothing with sugar and not fruit juices.
Drink LOTS of water. You really need it (and you'll want it) on this diet. It can even be dangerous if you don't drink enough to flush out excess ketones. Do NOT listen to the people who say purple on the ketone sticks is good or ultimate ketosis. They're wrong and getting dangerously close to ketoacidosis.
Things your body will flush out are electrolytes, which is sodium chloride (salt) Potassium (found in many veggies) and magnesium (found in nuts and dark chocolate)
Don't be too afraid to take it a bit of extra salt, specially while in keto flu (First few days to even up to two weeks you can get this, and it's because your body is adjusting)
As far as what a 7 year old might eat, you're totally allowed to cook things in lots of butter and feel free to add melted cheese to anything you want
For a desert you could have whipped cream and berries
I know you only asked for a grocery list, but I wanted to share, in case you didn't know some extra info, as well as things I've learned from my personal experiences.
Good luck with keto! Hope your mothers epilepsy gets better and you guys do great!
