Hi,
Just starting keto and could use some support. Also this is my very first time on a message board of any kind!
I have always carried a little extra weight, but it wasn't really a big deal as I fit normal clothes, was fairly active etc. I really got into weight lifting for a while when I was around 20 and I was looking pretty awesome during that time. Unfortunately I was pretty emotionally unhealthy and probably consumed most of my calories from booze. I used to play around with vegetarianism and veganism a lot too, just because I thought it was healthier. I'm about 5'4 and I look pretty good at 150 lbs. When I'm that weight I am a size 6-8 in clothes. I have a lot of muscle.
When I was about 23 I moved to Toronto from a small town, and that's when things got crazy!!! I would eat carbs for breakfast, a huge carby lunch, snack all day and usually go out for dinner and drinks every night, plus mre late night eating. My sugar cravings got crazy, I would eat 2 deserts instead of one and not even experience any sugar high. Previously I was a pretty healthy eater, not really sure what happened when I moved.
I weighed myself at a friends house one day because we were playing a wii game that required it and I was 200 lbs!! I was totally shocked. I knew I had gained weight but I thought maybe like 10 lbs!!
Long story short it's been four years since that day and I have gained and lost the same 5 lbs about 20 times since then. I tried everything, including shelling out $4000 for a personal trainer. Incidentally though this trainer told me that my ideal weight is about 174 lbs due to the amount of muscle I have, which is kind of nice to think that I'll look good without having to get down to like 130 lbs, which seems impossible.
Keto just seems intuitive to me. I am a nurse, and looking at the physiological side of keto things make sense.
I started on Feb 5/13 at 197 lbs and today on Feb 11/13 I am down to 187. I'm sure a lot of it is water but I haven't seen less that 188 in four years, so I'm pretty stoked!
I have been testing my urine (free strips-perks of being a nurse) and I went into keto within 24 hours. If I eat a bit more carbs I notice that while I stay in keto, the amount of ketones in my urine decreases.
So I usually have a probiotic with black coffee or green tea in the morning, at around 7, get a bit of activity then go to work. I have about 25-30 g of carbs in the form of frozen fruit, mixed with water, greens +, flax seeds and protein powder. For dinner at about six I have meat and vegetables. If the meat is leaner I cook the vegetables in lots of butter. I sometime have a bit of salad with nuts or cheese at this meal too. I don't really want to limit my veggies, and I've been in keto the whole time so thinking this is ok? I also take a multivitamin and B vitamins. Drinking more water, as well as teas. I try to fast from about 7 pm to 12 noon, about 17 hours. I felt hungry the first day but totally fine now. I think eating this way is better for me. Any opinions on that? I'm probably getting 1200 calories a day, I'm not really sure how to get more, because I'm finding I get filled up pretty quickly. Swallowing coconut oil does not appeal to me! I like the fruit in the morning, and I don't really love things that taste like fat, like bacon or cream. (Unless they're paired with carbs which is not an option.
My energy has increased and I feel clearer mentally too.
I'm wondering about exercise because I'm reading so many contradictory things?
I would like to weight train twice a week as I know my body looks good when I do, but what about cardio? Do I need it or are a couple walks and a job where I'm on my feet all day enough?
Also I'm making sleep a priority! I've already been waking up more naturally before my alarm.
Any advice, tips etc? I'd like to post photos but I'm too shy for now. : )
My current goal is to get to about 170 lbs in 10 weeks. (by mid-April ish) I think I can do it, people seem to lose pretty fast with this way of eating. It's only 17 lbs at this point. I'll keep going after but I think it would be pretty motivating to hit a target after being stuck for so long.
