Hi all! I'm new here and super excited to "start" my ketogenic diet... I've been on a low carb diet for awhile but usually get about 70-90 total carbs a day (did not calculate net). But I've started trying to go for 20 net grams a day which they say is optimal for weight loss. But my carb heaviest meal of the day is messing me up. I always have a salad for lunch, consisting of only spinach, broccoli, a few tomatoes, carrot slices, cucumber slices, and tuna. No dressing but I do have half an avocado on top as well. And according to my calculation, I'm still getting about 18g net carbs with that meal alone, even though it's only veggies and tuna and avocado. So my question is, do you think carbs from veggies are metabolized the same as carbs from other sources? Should I cut down on my veggie intake to hit 20 net grams? I feel like that's counter productive but I don't know, so that's why I'm here.

Well carrots are higher carbs, but are you getting your fats and protein in? I take in a total of 20 or less net carbs per day. Veggie carbs are probably better than bread carbs. Use something like my fitness pal to figure carbs. Ruled.me is also a keto site with tons of information and recipes.

That salad sounds delicious! If you want to make more keto-friendly, lose the carrots and even the tomatoes (that's what I would do because I don't even love tomatoes that much) and add a dressing for more fat. Then you'll have more carbs for the rest of your day and may not even miss those items at all.
Everyone's different on how veggie carbs affect them. For me, I'm way better off getting more veggies than protein - too much protein messes me up fast than too many carbs, but I know people for whom the opposite is true. You'll have to see for yourself.
