I've been following the ketogenic diets for the past three months. I've seen great results with fast loss and in my workouts. This past week I went for my annual physical and my Total cholesterol jumped from 212 to 237. My doctor wants to put me on Lipitor. Any thoughts?

Total cholesterol doesn't tell the whole story. What is your HDL, LDL, and triglycerides? I'm willing to bet that your HDL levels are really good (that's the good cholesterol) vs. the LDL and triglycerides. My doctor tells me that although my overall total cholesterol is high, he is not concerned at all because my HDL and the ratio is great. It's all about the ratios. You could have a total level of 170 and the ratios may not be as healthy as your 237 with the proper ratios.

Keto generally increases overall cholesterol, but as michellec pointed out, it does so usually by increasing the good HDL and also the large, fluffy LDL particles. Not all LDL is the "bad" kind as originally thought. Furthermore, ketogenic diets almost universally decrease triglycerides, which is a very favorable shift. It has to do with the ratios, just like michelle said. Furthermore, 237 isn't even that high! That was mine prior to the keto diet and no one mentioned medication. They have moved the "acceptable" range at my lab to below 240 from below 200, which I was happy to see. I don't know what Lipitor is but if it's a statin, I would run. Fast and Far. That's me, though. The total cholesterol number is irrelevant without the other numbers.
